Camden Pilates Classes

All Pilates classes at Camden Physiotherapy and Pilates Clinic are taught by Pilates trained physiotherapists. This means that you will be carefully supervised so even if there is a history of back or neck injury, or you have a particular sporting goal in mind you can be reassured of close attention. For this reason classes are kept to a maximum of ten clients per class.

What is Pilates?
Pilates is a body conditioning method that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. Targeting the deep postural muscles, Pilates works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it back into correct balance and alignment.

It will also help improve posture, achieving the delicate balance between strength and flexibility, and is a great way to relieve unwanted stress and tension and prevent injury in daily life.

Background
The method was developed by the late Joseph Pilates, born in 1880 in Germany.
A frail child, he had a keen interest in empowering the body to achieve its full potential. He found that aerobic exercise alone was not enough to keep his body feeling strong and free of aches and pains.

He opened his first studio for dancers in New York in 1920. Pilates continues to be used by athletes, but more recently has been adapted to help people of all levels. It is increasingly used to complement Physiotherapy and Osteopathy.

Who is Pilates suitable for?
Pilates is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Perfect for the first time exerciser, because of its slow, gentle and controlled movements as well as progressing to much higher levels, suitable for sports people, to minimize muscle imbalances and reduce the risk of injury.

It is particularly encouraged for those with a long history of recurrent back problems, now recommended by many orthopaedic consultants.

Athletes who suffer with recurrent foot, knee or hip problems will find particular benefit from this type of muscle re-balancing.

Group Pilates Classes
We welcome participants of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced.

Classes are all tailored to the needs of each individual, so whatever your level you will be shown a level of an exercise that will be just right for you. Then, as you progress, the exercise will be modified for you. The Physiotherapist will speak to new participants before the class to ascertain any specific goals or objectives. So, simply choose a time that will suit you, and we'll do the rest.

All classes are 'small equipment' classes. This means they are mat-based and may use foam rollers, core cushions, Therabands or gym balls. These are provided.  The Clinic does not run reformer or machine classes.

Classes run at lunchtime, various times every evenings and on Saturdays. You can view a list of our brand new, expanded Pilates class times for 2010 by clicking here.

Individual Pilates Classes
One-to-one Pilates classes can be arranged at any time by contacting reception. Individual sessions last 30 minutes and are £40. Sometimes people prefer to have a one-to-one session before joining a group class, but that's up to personal preference.
